AMARILLO, Texas (Feb. 14) -- West Texas A&M roughed up Central Oklahoma's pitching ace and went on to hammer the Bronchos 18-4 in the first game of a Lone Star Conference doubleheader here Saturday, with the second game suspended because of darkness.
The two teams were deadlocked 6-6 through nine innings of the nightcap, with that game to be completed Sunday before the regularly-scheduled doubleheader begins.
"We didn't do much of anything right," said UCO coach Wendell Simmons, whose team fell to 2-2 overall and 0-1 in the league. "We didn't pitch well, didn't swing the bats like we can and we made some big errors that really hurt us."
Clint Straka, the LSC co-Pitcher of the Year and an All-American last year, lasted just three innings against the Buffaloes. He gave up seven runs -- four earned -- and six hits while walking five before leaving the contest and was saddled with the loss.
UCO trailed just 3-2 after three innings as Andrew Foshee and John Bryant had run-scoring hits in the third, but WTAMU scored six runs in the fourth to take control before breaking it open with three more in the fifth and six in the sixth.
The Bronchos finished with just six hits, including two by Bryant.
