Bronchos California Bound

Central Oklahoma will be well-represented at the 40th Annual San Diego Crew Classic this weekend in Mission Bay, Calif.

For the first time the Bronchos will participate in both the Division II/III/Club Varsity Eight events as well the Division II/III/Club Fours event.  The eight will compete for the San Diego Zoo and Safari Park Cup.

During the 2012 Crew Classic the Bronchos finished a close second behind eventual national champion Humboldt State.  Central will once again face off with Humboldt on Saturday morning at 10 a.m. in heats.

The Broncho 8+ of Amy VanBuskirk (cox), Michaela Stam, Jenni Hagen, Karen Hoke, Jenna Goodner, Madison Martens, Tracey Lisowe, Rachel Kliewer, and Kelsey Philhower has been seeded fourth in the 13-boat field.

Orange Coast College A, Portland State, Sonoma State, UC-Santa Barbara B, and Orange Coast College B will also be competing the 10 a.m. heat. The other heat will feature No. 2-seed UC-Santa Barbara A, No. 3-seed UC-San Diego A, UC-Irvine, Mills College, Chapman University and UC-San Diego B.

The top-seeded Broncho 4+ of Jenna Laine Meraz (cox), Hannah Anderson, Brittany Rawlins, Samantha Elliott, and Ariel Good will race in a preliminary heat for lanes at 7:30 a.m. Saturday. Their competition will include UC-San Diego, Bates College, UC-Santa Barbara, Portland State, and UC-Irvine.

Grand finals for the 4+ and 8+ will take place Sunday morning at 11:30 and 11:50 a.m., respectively.

"We're excited to be making the trip out west," head coach Andy Derrick said.  "The speed in the west is always impressive and we are looking forward to the opportunity to see how we stack up.  We are particularly excited to be bringing both the 8+ and, for the first time, the 4+, as we focus on depth and being fast as a team, not just in one event.

"Last year this regatta had major implications on selection for NCAAs and I would expect nothing different this year, so we are all interested to see how it all shakes out."
