UCO Eliminated

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (May 9) – Central Oklahoma thrived on its record-setting offense throughout the 2015 season, but the Bronchos failed to get their bats going in a pair of loses at the NCAA Division II Central Regional I Tournament here Saturday.

UCO managed just nine hits and two runs on the day, collecting four hits in a 5-1 winner's bracket loss to No. 9-ranked Augustana before getting five in a 4-1 elimination setback to intrastate rival East Central.

The Bronchos, who set single-season team records for hits, runs, doubles and runs batted in, finished 41-20 while making its fourth straight national tournament appearance.  The Tigers improved to 34-15 in moving into Sunday's finals against the host Vikings (52-9).

"We just didn't swing the bats this weekend like we had all season," said head coach Cody White, whose team had only four hits in Friday's 4-1 tournament-opening win over No. 13 Winona State.  "Obviously we faced some good pitchers and that had something to do with it, but we never really got anything going offensively.

"It's a tough way to end the season, but I'm still really proud of this team and everything we accomplished.  We had a great year and our program will continue to be strong moving forward."

ECU took a 3-0 second-inning lead on just one hit, that a long home run to right field, and an unearned run in the second put the Tigers on top 4-0.

The Bronchos had eight straight groundball eights during one stretch and had only a second inning single from Ashleigh Tramel and third inning base hit from Shelby Carel until scoring their lone run in the fifth.

Kaylee Brunson -- the catalyst to UCO's offense throughout a stellar four-year career -- ripped a two-out triple to center field for her school-record 83rd hit of the season before scoring on Ashton Smith's single up the middle, but that was it for the Bronchos.

Augie took a quick lead in Saturday's first game with a lead-off home run in the bottom of the first and went on to finish with 10 hits.  The Vikings scored two more runs in the second, one in the third and another in the sixth to go up 5-0.

Brunson gave UCO an early scoring chance when the speedy senior beat out a bunt to lead off the game and went to second on Smith's sacrifice, but she was stranded by back-to-back fly outs.

UCO didn't manage another base-runner against Augie ace Jenelle Trautman until the sixth when Rachel Harper legged out a one-out hit to third base.  She went to second on Brunson's groundout before another grounder ended the inning.

The Bronchos avoided the shutout in its final at bat on Morgan Heard's two-out solo homer to right-center field, her second of the tournament and 10th of the season.

Tramel followed with a walk and Emily Ditmore singled to left field to give the Bronchos new life, but a pop-up ended the game.

UCO used solid defense to save two more runs, with Brunson making a catch against the top of the fence in center field in the field while Brooke Zukerman threw a runner out at the plate from right field in the third.

It was the final game for four seniors – Brunson, Ditmore, Devyn Frazier and Kelsey Berlin.
