UCO Goes 2-1 At National Duals

Dustin Reed
FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Jan. 9) – Dustin Reed started a five-match winning streak that put Central Oklahoma in control and the No. 11-ranked Bronchos stayed alive in the NWCA Division II National Duals with a 25-12 consolation victory over Lake Erie here Friday evening.

UCO slipped past Augustana 19-16 in the first round of the 16-team, double-elimination tournament and then fell to top-ranked and defending national champion Notre Dame (Ohio) 29-7 in the quarterfinals before staying alive with the win over Lake Erie.

The Bronchos, now 2-3 on the season, take on No. 6 McKendree at 8 a.m. (Central time) Saturday in the consolation semifinals and will wrestle for fifth- or seventh-place at 12 p.m. depending on the result of that dual.

"We've got to fight for everything we get and we did that today," head coach David James said.  "I'm proud of our guys, we grinded out some tough wins today and had some good performances."

The Bronchos dropped the opening match in the elimination dual against Lake Erie, but Reed quickly tied it with a 6-0 win at 133 pounds to kick-start the five-match streak that put UCO in command.

Reed had two takedowns and more than four minutes riding time in his shutout victory, Will Steltzlen followed with a 5-3 victory at 141 and Spencer Rutherford knocked off two-time All-American Zach Vargo 3-1 at 149 to put the Bronchos on top 9-3.

Jeromy Davenport gave up an early takedown before roaring back for a 7-2 win at 157 and top-rated Chris Watson capped the surge with a 10-1 major decision – his 19th bonus victory in a 20-0 season – to make it 16-3.

The Storm prevailed in overtime at 174, but Caleb Hawes clinched the dual with a tight 7-6 triumph at 184 and heavyweight Kyle Factor's first-period pin put the finishing touches on the win.

Reed, Rutherford, Davenport, Watson and Hawes earned wins in UCO's opening-round victory over Augustana.

Reed scored three takedowns in a methodical 8-3 triumph, while Rutherford scored his fourth fall of the season at the 2:32 mark to put the Bronchos in front to stay, 9-7.

Davenport had three takedowns in a 10-7 victory and Watson followed with another dominating effort, an 11-0 major decision that pushed UCO's lead to 16-7.

The Vikings made it 16-10 with a win at 174, but Hawes came through with a clutch performance when the rookie turned two reverses and a takedown into a 7-1 win that put the Bronchos on top 19-10.

Augie scored narrow wins in the final two matches, but it wasn't enough.

UCO notched just two wins against the powerful Falcons, who featured three returning individual champions.

Reed had a solid 6-2 triumph behind first- and third-period takedowns, while Watson had two near-falls and more than four minutes riding time in a 10-0 major decision.

Factor dropped a 2-1 decision when a last-second takedown try came up just short and Steltzlen fell 3-2 to fourth-ranked Maurice Miller.
