UCO Drops League Road Game

TOPEKA, Kan. (Jan. 23) –
Washburn outscored Central Oklahoma 17-7 over the final six-plus minutes to hand the Bronchos a 76-69 Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association setback here Thursday night.

UCO had a 62-59 lead with 6:27 left to play after two Aaron Anderson free throws, but the Ichabods hit a 3-pointer nine seconds later to tie it and ignite a 9-0 run that put them on top to stay.

The Bronchos had just 12 turnovers in the contest, but WU converted those into 18 points while UCO failed to score on just five miscues by the Ichabods.

Anderson led the way with 19 points, five rebounds and four assists, while Seth Heckart added 13 points and Philip Brown 10. Leading scorer and rebounder Josh Gibbs was limited to seven points and eight rebounds.

UCO took an early 4-0 lead on two Brown free throws and an Anderson layup, but the Ichabods answered back quickly and moved in front by six (22-16) midway through the opening half.

The Bronchos pulled within one at 35-34 on Jacob Strassle's 3-pointer with 2:22 left and it was a two-point deficit at 38-36 when Anderson made at layup at 0:19 before WU scored with three seconds left to take a 40-36 lead into intermission.

The Ichabods expanded their lead to nine (49-40) in the opening minutes of the second half and was up six (51-45) at the 12:47 mark when Heckart ignited a charge that gave UCO the lead.

The sophomore guard capped an 11-4 run with back-to-back 3-pointers to put the Bronchos on top 56-55 with 10:34 remaining and he answered a Washburn free throw with a layup that gave UCO a 58-56 lead at 9:15.

It was a 62-59 advantage with 6:27 left after Anderson's two foul shots, but the Ichabods started their game-deciding 9-0 run nine seconds later and the Bronchos couldn't answer back.

UCO returns to league action Sunday, traveling to Emporia, Kan. to take on Emporia State at 3:30 p.m.
