UCO Finishes Fourth In National Duals

Cory Dauphin
DES MOINES, Iowa (Jan. 12) – St. Cloud State won the final two matches to hand Central Oklahoma a 22-14 loss in the third-place bout of the NWCA Division II National Duals here Sunday afternoon.

The No. 3-ranked Bronchos overcame an early 10-0 deficit to take 11-10 and 14-13 leads before the fifth-rated Huskies earned a one-point win at 197 pounds and first-period fall at heavyweight to deal UCO a second consecutive last-match loss.

"It was a disappointing day," said head coach David James, whose team lost to Newberry 19-18 in the semifinals before falling to SCSU. "We had chances to put both duals away and couldn't get it done. Some guys stepped up and did what they needed to do, but we had some others who didn't perform like they're capable."

The Huskies won the first three matches to jump out to a 10-0 lead, including a stunning 14-2 major decision at 133 by No. 2 Andy Pokorny over No. 5 Casy Rowell.

Top-ranked 149-pounder Jordan Basks started UCO's rally with a 9-0 major decision behind a six-point second-period eruption and No. 1 Cory Dauphin's 12-3 major decision at 157 pulled the Bronchos within 10-8.

It was the 32nd consecutive win for Dauphin, who had four takedowns and a near-fall in rolling over fourth-ranked Clint Poster.

Chris Watson's first-period takedown was the difference in a 4-2 win at 165 that put the Bronchos in front 11-10, though SCU moved back in front by winning at 174.

UCO regained the lead 14-13 with Znick Ferrell's 3-2 victory at 184 as Ferrell broke a third-period tie with an escape before staving off a last-second takedown attempt by Dylan Braun.

The Huskies went ahead to stay at 197 when Chris Brassell edged Garrett Henshaw 3-2, with Brassell breaking a 1-1 tie on a takedown with 15 seconds left before Henshaw got loose right before the final buzzer.

That left it up to the heavyweights to decide and Cody Dauphin got an early takedown for a 2-0 lead over Austin Goergen. It was tied 4-4 in a wild first period when Goergen reversed Dauphin and quickly put him on his back to get the fall at the 2:12 mark.

UCO, now 4-2 in duals, returns to action Thursday when the Bronchos go to Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association rival Fort Hays State. The unranked Tigers finished a surprising fifth in the tournament, going 4-1 for the weekend.
