EMPORIA, Kan. (May 6) -- Kevin Blue's run-scoring double in the top of the 10th inning scored the lone run of the game to lift Central Oklahoma to a thrilling 1-0 upset of No. 22-ranked Emporia State here Friday night.
It was the second straight one-run extra-inning game between the two teams, with the Hornets pulling out a 3-2 victory Thursday night. The three-game series ends with a 1 p.m. contest Saturday.
The Bronchos broke the tense scoreless tie in the 10th when Mike Boyle grounded a one-out single through the right side before coming around to score on Blue's double to the left-center field gap.
Uriah Fisher, who relieved starter Edgar Lopez to start the ninth, gave up a one-out single in the bottom of the 10th before nailing down the win with back-to-back strikeouts.
UCO, now 22-13 on the season, got a brilliant outing from Lopez. The junior right-hander retired the first 13 batters of the game, escaped a trio of jams and gave up just six hits and one walk while striking out seven before leaving after eight innings.
Fisher didn't walk a batter while allowing a hit in each of the two innings he worked and picked up the win to improve to 3-1 for the season.
UCO managed just seven hits, with J.P. Maples going 3-for-5 and Blue 2-for-5.
The Bronchos had a pair of good scoring chances, but failed to score after putting runners on second and third with two outs in both the fourth and seventh innings.
Lopez, who didn't allow a base-runner until giving up a one-out double in the fifth, used strikeouts to get out of two-out, second and third situations in that inning and the seventh. ESU had another opportunity in the eighth after loading the bases with two outs, but Lopez got an inning-ending groundout.
