UCO 5th At National Meet

Ky Corley
PUEBLO, Colo. (March 9) – Ky Corley and Tanner Keck moved into the semifinals and Central Oklahoma had one other individual still alive after the first day of the NCAA Division II Wrestling Championships here Friday.

The No. 5-ranked Bronchos are fifth in the team standings with 30.5 points.  No. 3 Nebraska-Kearney has a stranglehold on the team lead with 56.5 points, followed by top-ranked St. Cloud State (41), No. 10 Wisconsin-Parkside (34), No. 7 Grand Canyon (31.5) and UCO.

The tournament resumes at 11 a.m. (Oklahoma time) Saturday with the championship semifinals and the conclusion of all consolation matches.  The championship finals are set for 8 p.m.

"It wasn't a very good night for us, that's for sure," UCO coach David James said.  "We came here with nine guys and it's obviously a big disappointment to have just three left after the first day.  Hopefully those three can keep pushing forward."

Corley advanced to the semifinals with a 5-0 shutout of Adams State's Josh Hensley at 149 pounds, while Tanner Keck had two first-period takedowns en route to a 7-6 victory over Augustana's Jayd Docken at 184.

Casy Rowell was the only other wrestler still alive for UCO in the consolations at 141, while 133 Dustin Reed, 157 Cory Dauphin, 165 Chris Watson, 174 Kelly Henderson, 197 Jarrett Edison and heavyweight Cody Dauphin were all eliminated.

Corley avenged an 11-4 regular-season loss in his win over Hensley.  The Stillwater senior broke a scoreless tie on a takedown with 20 seconds left in the second period, then added an escape and takedown in the final stanza to cap off the victory.

The fifth-rated Corley, now 20-7 for the season and riding a nine-match winning streak, will take on Nebraska-Kearney's No. 3 Raufeon Stots in the semis.

Keck had two first-period takedowns to lead 4-2 over Docken, made it 5-2 with a second-period escape and was up 7-3 after a third-period takedown before Docken scored an escape and takedown in the final seconds to make it close.

The sixth-rated Keck, 26-8 on the year, will meet No. 7 Adam Walters of Findlay in the semifinals.

UCO pulled off three upsets in the first round in winning six of nine matches, but managed only the Corley and Keck wins in the quarterfinals.

Reed scored a second-period pin of No. 7-ranked Evan Yenolevich of Kutztown at 133 pounds after trailing 5-0, Rowell toppled No. 8 Max Ortega of Adams State 6-3 and Watson knocked off third-rated Isaiah Jimenez of San Francisco State 3-2 to highlight UCO's first-round wins.

Corley, Cory Dauphin and Keck also had first-round wins, while 174 Kelly Henderson, 197 Edison and Cody Dauphin all lost their opening bouts.

Edison stayed alive in the first round of consolations with a 53-second fall and Cody Dauphin had an 8-1 rout, but Henderson was eliminated with a 4-3 loss.

Rowell was the only winner in the consolation quarterfinals, getting a two-point near-fall with 40 seconds left to break a 7-7 tie with Limestone's Kenneth Kamprich en route to a 10-7 victory.
