Bronchos Participate In Pro Day

Central Oklahoma hosted its annual football pro day Wednesday, March 14th. Among 12 participants from different Oklahoman colleges were six UCO players who completed their eligibility last fall and tried out under the close look of professional scouts.

Bryce Davis, Tucker Cason, Ahmad Jones, Dominick Gilbert-Phillips, Matt Jackson and Terry Battle made their shot in Hamilton Field House and Wantland stadium.

The workout included six different drills: vertical and broad jump, 225-pound bench press, 40-yard dash, 10-yard sprints and a 20-yard shuttle where athletes run five yards to one side, then back 10 yards and then five yards to the starting point.

“I think our guys did a nice job,” said UCO strength and conditioning coach Jacob Black. “Last year we didn't have an opportunity to work on footwork drills, and you could tell that some of the kids just never saw these drills before and were a bit frustrated, but they showed pretty good results.”

UCO's Bryce Davis appears to have the best shot at the next level, getting a long look at deep snapper. S couts were checking him out more precisely and made him do some extra drills.

“Long snapper is a special defense position,” explained coach Black. “If you are good in position like that, you have more chances to be picked up, because there are not many people who can do it.”

UCO annually hold one of the three pro days that take place in Oklahoma. Players who try out must be invited by professional scouts unless they were a UCO player. “It's a great recruiting tool for us,” said UCO football head coach Nick Bobeck. “Every small college in the state of Oklahoma comes to UCO to work out at the pro day. I f you don't go to UCO, you have to be invited.”

Scouts usually contact head coaches from different schools to know if they have any kids that can play professional level or look at the statistics and decide who they want to invite. “It's invite-only because we don't want to waste the scouts' time,” said Black. “Those guys are very busy travelling all over the country and calling every different school.”

Scouts from the Green Bay Packers, New England Patriots, Atlanta Falcons, Indianapolis Colts, San Francisco 49ers, Jacksonville Jaguars, Seattle Seahawks and Denver Broncos came to Edmond for the pro day.
