EDMOND (Feb. 19) –
Brittany Weaver's sixth inning sacrifice fly lifted Central Oklahoma to a 5-4 second-game victory and completed a doubleheader sweep of Emporia State here Sunday afternoon.

The Bronchos blasted three home runs to take the opener 10-6 and had two more in the nightcap, but it was Weaver's caught fly in center field that plated the winning run.

Nathalie Timmermans led off the sixth with a double to left field and she moved to third on Kacie Edwards' single before scoring on Weaver's long fly out.  Rachael Steverson put the Hornets down in order in the top of the seventh to wrap up the win.

UCO, which added the two games late Saturday after play at the South Central Regional Challenge in Durant was cancelled earlier that day, improved to 4-3 on the young season.

“Those were two good wins for us and it was a great way to open the home schedule,” head coach Genny Stidham said.  “We got off to a slow start, but we played pretty well in both games and got a couple of wins we needed to have.”

UCO fell behind 2-0 in the top of the first inning in the opener before getting a massive three-run homer from Timmermans in its initial at bat to move in front.

The Hornets tied it with a run in the second it stayed that way until the third when Timmermans struck again, this time belting a two-run homer, and Kacie Edwards followed with a solo shot to make it 6-3.

ESU pulled within 6-5 in the fourth, but the Bronchos put the game away with four runs in their half of the inning as Edwards had a two-run single and Megan Whitmire a two-RBI double.

Edwards went 4-for-4 to lead UCO's 15-hit attack, while Kayce Raines had three hits and Timmermans and Devyn Frazier two apiece. Steverson earned the pitching win with 3 2/3 innings of relief work, giving up two hits and one run.

The Bronchos jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second contest, getting a sacrifice fly from Timmermans in the first and a two-run homer from Kailee Roe in the second.

It was a 4-2 lead after Edwards homered to lead off the fourth, but ESU got a two-run homer of its own in the fifth to pull even.

It stayed that way until Weaver came through with the sacrifice fly.

Steverson again got the pitching win in relief, giving up four hits and two runs in five innings while striking out six.  Edwards had two of UCO's seven hits.

The Bronchos stay home to host Northeastern State for a Friday doubleheader and Drury for a Saturday twinbill.
