EDMOND (April 4) –
Colby Shrum and Baer Aneshansley combined to go five-under-par on the back nine in the afternoon round to spark a late rally that put Central Oklahoma in the driver's seat after the first day of the UCO/KickingBird Golf Classic here Monday.

The No. 5-ranked Bronchos shot a 306 in the morning round during brutal scoring conditions that featured steady winds of 30-35 miles per hour with gusts to 50 before rebounding with an second-round 288. That gave UCO a 594 total after two trips around the 6,722-yard, par-70 KickingBird Golf Club, good for a three-shot lead over Cameron heading into Tuesday's final round.

No. 6 Abilene Christian is third in the 19-team tournament at 599, followed by Washburn (600) and East Central (604). The average score in the first round was 79.43 before dropping to 76.04 in the afternoon as the wind died down somewhat.

Shrum used a three-under 32 on the back nine to rally for a second-round 72, while Aneshansley closed with a two-under 33 in an afternoon 71 in lifting UCO into the lead. The Bronchos also got a 72 from Chris Muriana, a 73 from Andrew Green and a 74 from Josh Creel.

“We didn't play our best and threw away a lot of shots, but we're still in the hunt,” UCO coach Dax Johnston said. “Hopefully we'll come back tomorrow and play better. We're going to have to because there's a lot of teams not far behind us and I know they'll be ready to play.”

Shrum's opening 74 was one of just two rounds under 75 in the morning and his second-round 72 left him fourth in the individual standings at 146, two shots behind Cameron's Jason Timmis and ACU's Cyril Bouniol.

Shrum triple bogeyed his first hole in the afternoon en route to a front-nine 40, but birdied both par-5s on the back side and added a 15-foot birdie putt on the par-3 16th for the 32 that got him back in the medalist race.

Aneshansley is tied for eighth at 148 with rounds of 77-71. He turned at 38 in the afternoon and then birdied two of the first three holes on the back nine before finishing with six straight pars for his closing 33.

Green and Muriana are tied for 18th at 150.

UCO's second-team unit was tied for 15th with a 622 total after rounds of 312-310. J.B. Law leads the way at 153 after rounds of 79-74, while Matt Charlson shot 77-78.
