Bronchos Take Five Titles, Rhodes Qualifies For Nationals

ARKANSAS CITY, Kan. (April 2) – Central Oklahoma claimed four individual titles and a relay crown during a dominating performance at the Cowley Tiger Invitational here Saturday.

The Bronchos had at least one top-eight placer in 14 individual events – including five with at least three – in addition to running away with the 1,600-meter relay.

“It was a great meet for us,” UCO coach Martha Brennan said. “We came out strong and had a lot of really good performances.”

Lacey Rhodes led the Bronchos by placing in five different events, including a winning performance in the high jump during which she met automatic qualifying standards for the NCAA Division II national meet with a 5-foot-9 ¼ effort that is tied for the best in Division II this season.

UCO also got championship showings from Jasmire Love in the 400-meter dash (58.64), Alina Istrate in the 5,000 steeplechase (18:54.23) and Madison Berryman in the javelin (128-1).

Berryman led four placers in the javelin, with Rhodes coming in third (125-5), Amy Waters seventh (106-2) and Lauren Harris eighth (87-7).

The Bronchos had three top-eight placers in the long jump, 100-meter hurdles, 1,500 run and 400 dash.

Rhodes led the way in the long jump with a third-place showing at 17-4 ¼, while Berryman came in fourth (17-1 ½) and Lauren Harris fifth (16-4 ½). Rhodes was fourth in the 100 hurdles (16.56), with Berryman sixth (16.85) and Brittany Davis seventh (16.99).

Katie Kerns ran the 1,500 in 5:03.15 to place fifth, with Angelica Martinez (5:16.01) coming in seventh and Heather Braley (5:17.92) eighth. Love's win in the 400 was followed a 3-4 finish by Shanee Harris (1:02.74) and G-Coty Shorter (1:02.77).

Berryman (28.12) finished fifth and Rhodes (29.00) seventh in the 200, with Heather Smith (1:14.30) and Davis (1:16.24) coming in 4-5 in the 400 hurdles. Abigail Morrison took sixth in the discus at 120-9 and Kaitlin Nichols seventh at 120-1, while Berryman was fourth in the high jump at 4-9.

UCO also got a runner-up showing from Hannah Gibson in the pole vault at 9-10, while Alicia Crigler took fourth in the 100 (12.73) and Nichols fifth in the shot put (37-6).

The Bronchos travel to Emporia, Kan. next week for the Emporia State Relays.
