DURANT, Okla. (Feb. 20) -- Central Oklahoma bounced back from a tough extra-inning loss to end play in the three-day South Central Challenge with a 3-2 victory over Southern Arkansas here Sunday afternoon.
The Bronchos fell 3-2 in eight innings to No. 8-ranked Nebraska-Omaha in their first game of the day before coming back to knock off SAU and finish 3-3 in the tournament, going 1-1 each day.
"We lost a couple of tough games that could have easily gone our way, but I thought we played hard all weekend," UCO coach Genny Stidham said. "We made some mistakes we need to get corrected and those are things we'll work on in practice this week."
The Bronchos scored an unearned run in the third to take a 1-0 lead over UNO, with the Mavericks coming back to tie it in the fifth. UCO went back on top in the top of the sixth on Brooke Walters' solo home run only to see UNO make it 2-2 in its half of the inning.
The Mavericks broke that deadlock in the bottom of the eighth to hand UCO its second extra-inning defeat of the tournament.
SAU scored first in the second game of the day, with the Bronchos tying it in the second inning when Megan Whitmire singled, went to second on Brittany Weaver's single and scored on Brittany Geter's two-out base hit.
The Muleriders scored again in the fourth to take a 2-1 lead, but UCO went in front 3-2 in the fifth when Katelyn Rouppet singled and Geter walked before Hannah Justus came through with a two-run double.
Rachael Steverson earned the pitching win, striking out eight in going the distance.
The Bronchos, now 5-3 on the season, return to action this weekend at the West Texas A&M Triangular.
