PHOENIX, Ariz. (April 5) – Erica Bensch fired an opening-round 77 to lead Central Oklahoma to a tie for sixth place after the first day of the Grand Canyon Women's Invitational here Monday.

The Bronchos finished with a 324 total on the par-72 Palm Valley Golf Course. Tarleton State fired a sizzling 298 to open up a big 16-shot lead in the 17-team tournament, while UCO is tied for sixth with St. Edward's heading into Tuesday's final round.

Bensch continued a strong spring season with her 77, overcoming a front-nine 42 with a one-under 35 that has her fifth in the individual race.

The Bronchos also got an 81 from Cassy Knight, while Raelynn Farthing and Maria Jimenez had 83s and Mychael McWhorter an 87.

“Erica did a great job of bouncing back after getting off to a rough start,” UCO coach Michael Bond said.  “We hit the ball okay, but we continue to hurt ourselves with big numbers and that's something we have to get corrected.”
