EDMOND (April 5) –
Central Oklahoma put together its two best rounds of the year and had four players among the top-17 individuals to finish first-day play in the UCO/KickingBird Golf Classic in third place.

The Bronchos fired back-to-back one-over-par 281s on the wind-blown par-70 KickingBird Golf Course – 13 shots under their previous best score -- and are at 562 heading into Tuesday's final round.

Cameron leads the 17-team tournament at five-under-par 555, four shots ahead of second-place Abilene Christian and seven in front of UCO.

“I couldn't ask any more of my team, they went out and played really well today,” head coach Dax Johnston said. “It was a long, hard day with the way the wind was blowing, but we stayed focused and made a lot of birdies to overcome some of the mistakes we made.”

The Bronchos, who have won their own tournament four of the last five years, had 37 birdies on the day.

Andrew Green led the way with rounds of 70-67 that has him tied for third in the medalist race at three-under 137.  The sophomore standout made three bogeys and three birdies in his opening 70, then opened his afternoon round with 10 straight pars before playing the final eight holes three-under.

Trevor Stafford (70-71) and Dillon Rust (69-72) are tied for 10th at one-over 141, while #J.B. Law# (72-71) is tied for 17th at 143.  Colin Morgan added rounds of 73-74 for UCO.

Stafford made three birdies and three bogeys in his morning 70 before coming back with an up-and-down 71 that featured 11 pars, three bogeys, two birdies, one double bogey and an eagle on the par-5 15th hole.

Rust made four birdies in posting his one-under morning round and then had an eventful afternoon, using five birdies to help overcome a triple bogey, a double bogey and two bogeys.

The Bronchos also had three players competing as individuals – Zach Cleland (66-75=141), Matt Charlson (73-72=145) and Derek Franco (70-79=149).  Cleland had four birdies and an eagle in his morning 66 and is tied for 10th in the standings.
