Bronchos Pick Up Big Wins

DALLAS, Texas (March 6) – No. 26-ranked Central Oklahoma picked up a couple of huge wins here Saturday, knocking off No. 14 St. Edward's 6-3 and then edging Arkansas-Fort Smith 5-4 on Lacy Caldwell's clutch victory in the final singles match.

The Bronchos stretched their winning streak to six straight with the two hard-earned neutral-site victories while also gaining a measure of revenge against an SEU team that eliminated UCO in last year's NCAA Division II national tournament.

“It's great to see that we are getting stronger and all the hard work we put in during the week to prepare for the matches paid off for us,” head coach Natalya Smith said.   “It's such a joy as a coach to see a match where your players execute everything you've been working on and have fun at the same time.”

The Bronchos picked up a pair of 8-1 routs in doubles play to take an early 2-1 lead over SEU and then got singles wins from Julia Shviadok, Eli Abramovic, Virginie Rodriguez and Rose Cabato.   Abramovic stormed back from a 6-0 first-set loss to take the final two sets 7-6, 7-6, while Shviadok pulled out a 6-3, 2-6, 6-2 triumph.

UCO again won two of the three doubles matches to move ahead against Arkansas-Fort Smith, with Shviadok and Abramoic teaming up for their second win of the day and Cabato and Anto Rossini doing the same.

Shviadok and Cabato also won in singles and the match was deadlocked at 4-all when Caldwell rallied for a 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 win in the final bout.

UCO returns to action Tuesday at Lone Star Conference rival Midwestern State.
