EDMOND (March 13) – Central Oklahoma wrapped up a four-game series sweep of Lone Star Conference North Division rival Northeastern State here Saturday, claiming 5-4 and 5-3 wins behind complete-game pitching outings by Molly Shivers and Rachael Steverson.
Niki Hunt drove in three runs in the one-run first-game victory that Shivers went the distance in, while Kayce Raines and Kacie Edwards each had two RBIs in the nightcap as Steverson pitched the full seven innings.
UCO improved to 13-5 on the year and 4-0 in the LSC North with the two wins. The Bronchos return to league action Monday, hosting Midwestern State for a 1 p.m. twinbill.
Shivers improved to 7-3 with the win in the opener, scattering six hits while striking out nine and walking three.
UCO took a 2-0 lead in the second inning on a sacrifice fly by Brittany Weaver and RBI single by Megan Bentley, with Hunt’s run-scoring single in the third upping it to 3-0.
Hunt came through again in the fifth with a two-run single to make it 5-0 and those runs proved crucial in the sixth when NSU pushed across four runs to pull within 5-4. Shivers put the RiverHawks down in order to close out the win.
Hunt and Raines had two hits apiece to pace UCO’s eight-hit attack.
The Bronchos managed just five hits in the second game, but that was enough to complete the sweep.
UCO went up 1-0 in its initial at bat when Raines led off with a single, stole second, went to third on a ground-out and scored on Hunt’s single.
The Bronchos stretched the advantage to 5-0 in the second as Edward’s had a two-run single, Kelsey Tiger an RBI base hit and Raines a run-scoring ground-out.
NSU got its three runs in the top of the seventh with the help of three UCO errors before Steverson closed out the game to improve to 5-2 on the year.
Hunt had two of UCO’s five hits, while Steverson fanned five and allowed two walks.
