EDMOND (Feb. 27) -- Central Oklahoma managed just three runs in dropping a Lone Star Conference doubleheader to Texas A&M-Kingsville Saturday afternoon at Broncho Field.
The Bronchos fell 1-0 in the first game despite a fine pitching outing by Kale Murphree and then lost a 7-2 decision in the nightcap to fall to 3-5 on the season and 1-5 in the league. The teams return for another twinbill at 12:30 p.m. Sunday.
“We just didn't do much at the plate and that was the difference,” UCO coach Wendell Simmons said. “Hopefully we can come back tomorrow and do a better job offensively.”
Murphree allowed just four hits and one run in working six innings of the opener while striking out eight and walking one, but it wasn't enough as UCO managed just five hits of its own.
TAMUK scored the lone run of the game in the top of the fifth with a two-out RBI single and the Bronchos advanced just one runner past second in the contest. That came in the bottom of the seventh when Luke Yost started the inning with a single, went to second on a sacrifice bunt and third on a ground out before the Javelinas got the final out to end the game.
UCO took a 1-0 lead in the first inning of the second game on Taylor Brown's lead-off home run, but the Javelinas came back with two runs in the third to take the lead. TAMUK added three runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth to make it 7-1, with the Bronchos getting their final run in the seventh.
UCO finished with nine hits, getting two apiece from Yost and Tucker Brown.
