EDMOND (Feb. 1) –
An early barrage of long-range sharpshooting quickly turned a showdown of Lone Star Conference North Division co-leaders into a mismatch Monday night at Hamilton Field House as streaking Central Oklahoma raced past Northeastern State, 84-50.

The Bronchos made five of their season-high 17 3-pointers in the first five minutes of the game to grab an early eight-point lead and were never really threatened in rolling to their 13th straight win.

UCO improved to 17-4 overall and 6-0 in the league in equaling the second-longest winning streak in school history (trailing a 14-game streak in 1963-64). The RiverHawks fell to 13-7 and 4-1.

Leading the way for the Bronchos was junior star Dauntae Williams, who finished with 10 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists to register UCO’s first triple-double since David Foote turned the trick against Angelo State on Jan. 19, 1991.

“We got off to a great start shooting the ball and played with a lot of confidence,” UCO coach Terry Evans said.  “Everybody’s contributing and we’re playing really well right now.”

The Bronchos ended up shooting better from beyond the arc than inside it, making 17-of-34 long-range shots (50.0 percent) and 15-of-31(48.4 percent) two-point attempts in scoring 26 points over NSU’s defensive average (58.3) entering the game.

Five players finished in double figures, with Eric Cazenave hitting five 3-pointers in scoring a game-high 17 points while adding five assists.   Chris Rhymes added 16 points, Tyler Phillips had a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds and Shane Carroll was 4-of-5 from long range in a 12-point outing.

UCO actually trailed 4-0 early, but Cazenave and Williams had two 3-pointers apiece and Carroll another one in a 15-3 blitz that gave the Bronchos a 15-7 lead not even five minutes into the contest.

Back-to-back treys by Rhymes and Carroll pushed the lead to 14 (25-11) at the 11:10 mark and the Bronchos were up by 18 (34-16) after a Rhymes layup with 7:37 remaining.

NSU rallied to within 10 (38-28) by halftime, but Rhymes and Williams opened the second half with layups and UCO was off and running again.  The lead reached 21 at 61-40 on a Keith Marks layup with 11:43 left and steadily grew the rest of the game.

The Bronchos don’t return to action again until going to Southwestern Oklahoma next Wednesday.
