NOBLESVILLE, Ind. (Sept. 28) -- Brutal playing conditions and a PGA-worthy golf course caused scores to soar on the first day of the Division II Preview here Monday, with Central Oklahoma ending up in a tie for fifth place after the opening 18 holes.

UCO shot a 320 at the Jack Nicklaus-designed Sagamere Golf Club, a rugged 7,038-yard, par-72 layout that was made even tougher by 40 mile-per-hour winds and 55-degree playing conditions.  Thirty-six holes were scheduled to be played Monday, but the afternoon round was cancelled after the wind caused golf balls to start rolling on the green.

Central Missouri shot a 309 to take a five-shot lead in the 18-team tournament over Grand Valley State and Washburn.  Rollins was third at 317, with the Bronchos and host Indianapolis tied for fifth.

Final-round play begins at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday.

"Without a doubt this was the hardest conditions I have ever seen, either as a player or coach," said UCO coach Dax Johnston.  "The golf course was as hard as Oak Tree National and the wind was just brutal.

"Our goal today was just to try and get four scores in the 70s.  We didn't quite do that, but I was proud of my guys and they kept us in the tournament."

Dillon Rust had the low round for the Bronchos, shooting consecutive 39s for a 78 that has him tied for 11th in the individual standings.  UCO also got an 80 from Colin Morgan, while Zach Cleland and Matt Charlson shot 81 and Andrew Green 87.

Only 29 players in the 93-player field broke 80, with 12 scores in the 90s.
