JOPLIN, Mo. (Sept. 19) -- Alina Istrate led the way for the Central Oklahoma cross country team in the rugged Southern Stampede here Saturday morning.
The Bronchos, with five freshmen in the lineup, finished 22nd in the 41-team event with 591 points. Division I power Arkansas ran away with the team title, followed by host Missouri Southern, Dallas Baptist, Pittsburg State and Harding.
Istrate came in 74th out of 359 runners in the five-kilometer race, finishing with a season-best 19:30.49 clocking. Evelyn Berko was next for UCO, running a 19:58.35 to come in 100th.
"This is a really tough meet with a lot of great teams on a hard course," UCO coach J.D. Martin said. "We ran better than last week and continue to make good progress with a young team."
Other runners for the Bronchos were Angelica Martinez (136th, 20:24.92), Cara Cox (168th, 20:44.70), Julia Crocker (197th, 21:03.53), Angel Vick (203rd, 21:07.99), Hannah Pempsell (210th, 21:12.93) and Iasha Keller (264th, 22:01.38).
UCO is off next week before returning to action Oct. 3 at the Cowboy Jamboree in Stillwater.
