Shrum Claims OGA Title

Colby Shrum
NORMAN, Okla. (Aug. 5) -- Central Oklahoma's Colby Shrum used a clinching birdie on the final hole to overcome some back-nine struggles and claim a two-stroke victory in the Oklahoma Golf Association Stroke Play Championship here Wednesday.

The senior-to-be from Perry entered the final round of the 54-hole event with a five-stroke lead after rounds of 62-67 and shot a closing 73 at The Trails Golf Club to finish with an eight-under-par 202 total.

Shrum held a six-shot lead after shooting a one-over 36 on the front nine and he was still comfortably in front through 13 holes before three bogeys in a four-hole stretch cut the lead to one going into the 18th hole.

But Shrum hit two cluch shots on the 445-yard par-4 closing hole before draining a 15-foot birdie putt to claim the two-shot win over Rob Laird, who shot a final-round 67 to finish second at 204.

The win continued a strong summer showing for the two-time All-American.  Shrum was medalist runner-up at the OGA Match Play Championship and made it to the quarterfinals of that event and last week he shot 66-67 to win the Oklahoma qualifying tournament for the U.S. Amateur that will be held in Tulsa Aug. 24-30.

Two other UCO golfers finished in the top 15 in the OGA Stroke Play Championship.  Sophomore-to-be Andrew Green shot a closing 72 to finish 11th with a one-over-par 211 total, while junior-to-be Austin Bowman had a 73 in tying for 14th at 214.
