Shrum Qualifies For U.S. Amateur

Colby Shrum
OKLAHOMA CITY (July 27) -- For only the third time in school history a Central Oklahoma golfer has qualified for the U.S. Amateur Championship.

Two-time All-American Colby Shrum won a sectional qualifying tournament at Quail Creek Golf and Country Club Monday, firing a sizzling seven-under-par 133 in the 36-hole event to advance to the U.S. Amateur that will be held Aug. 24-30 at Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa.

Only three golfers moved on from Monday's 74-player qualifier at Quail Creek, one of 99 sectional tournaments being held around the country to fill the 312-player U.S. Amateur field.  Christopher Ward (134) and Kevin Tway (135) earned the two other spots.

A senior-to-be from Perry and the Lone Star Conference Player of the Year the past two seasons, Shrum had rounds of 67-66 in winning the sectional.  Two other UCO golfers finished in the top 10, with Andrew Green coming in sixth at 141 after rounds of 69-72 and Dillon Rust tying for seventh at 72-71=143.

Dustin Semsch (2001) and Mitch Boles (2005) are the only other UCO golfers to qualify for the U.S. Amateur.

The stroke-play portion of the U.S. Amateur will be held Aug. 24-25 at Southern Hills and Cedar Ridge Country Club in Tulsa.  The low 64 players after 36 holes of stroke play advance to the match play portion of the tournament at Southern Hills that will determine the champion.
