Bronchos Overcome Seminole

SEMINOLE, Okla. (Feb. 24) – A pair of injury default losses wasn't enough to stop Central Oklahoma here Tuesday as the Bronchos picked up a 5-4 win over Seminole State College.

UCO was forced to default at No. 6 singles and No. 3 doubles due to Amy Cabato's injury, but won five of the seven remaining bouts to improve to 3-1 on the young season.

Julia Shviadok, Lacy Caldwell and Elizabeta Abramovic all cruised to easy straight-set wins in singles while Audrey Donovan had a 6-1, 2-0 lead in her match at No. 2 before Seminole's Cassandra Klebar was forced to retire with injury.

Shviadok and Julie Vo teamed up for an 8-1 rout in picking up a key win at No. 2 doubles for the Bronchos.

“We didn't have Amy as our sixth player and that made it a real challenge for us,” UCO coach Natalya Smith said.  “We started the match down 2-0, but it didn't stop us from dominating in four singles matches and the one doubles match we won.

“I think the girls did what they had to do today and just took care of their matches. We should be healthy and ready to go for a tough weekend ahead.”

The Bronchos go to Joplin, Mo. To take on Missouri Southern Saturday and to Springfield, Mo. To meet Drury Sunday before returning home to open Lone Star Conference play against perennial power Abilene Christian at 2:30 p.m. Monday.
