EDMOND (Feb. 14) – Alley Roberts and Kelsey Tiger fueled a first-game outburst that gave Central Oklahoma a doubleheader split with Washburn here Saturday afternoon.
Roberts went 3-for-4 with a home run and four RBI while Tiger had a pair of doubles and drove in three runs in an 11-1 rout in the opener before Washburn came back to take a 6-2 victory in the nightcap.
UCO went 3-1 in its opening weekend of play after sweeping a twinbill from Northwest Missouri Friday. The Bronchos return to action next weekend with six games at the Southeastern Oklahoma Classic.
“We did a good job making things happen in the first game, but didn't get the key hits we needed in the second one,” UCO coach Genny Stidham said. “It was a pretty good start for us and gives us something to build on.”
The Bronchos took advantage of nine walks in the opener, putting together a 10-hit attack in ending the game after five innings on the eight-run rule.
UCO broke it open early, using a five-run uprising in the second to break a 1-1 tie. The Bronchos had four walks and three hits in that frame, with Tigers' two-run double the big blow.
Tiger doubled again in the third and Roberts followed with her second homer of the young season, this one a blast to right-center field that made it 8-1. The senior star added a two-run single in the fourth as UCO upped the lead to 11-1 en route to ending the game early.
Freshman Rachael Steverson earned the pitching win in her first career start, giving up just three hits.
Washburn jumped to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning in the second game and the Bronchos never recovered, leaving nine runners on base.
Roberts had two of UCO's six hits.
