DURANT, Okla. (Feb. 14) – A pair of devastating scoring runs paved the way for a Central Oklahoma rout here Saturday night, with the No. 10-ranked Bronchos rolling past Southeastern Oklahoma 90-54.
UCO used a 15-2 spurt midway through the first half to seize the lead and opened the second half with a rapid-fire 18-2 spree to break the game open en route to winning for the 11th time in 12 outings.
The Bronchos outrebounded SOSU 47-26, committed just 10 turnovers and shot a solid 48.6 percent (36-of-74) from the field in improving to 21-3 on the year and 8-1 in the Lone Star Conference North Division with three games left in the regular season.
“We got off to a slow start, but played good defense the whole game and finally started making some baskets in the second half,” UCO coach Terry Evans said. “Everybody contributed and we picked up a good road win.”
Eleven of UCO's 13 players scored, with four making it into double figures.
Lance Harper hit 9-of-13 shots with a pair of free throws in scoring 20 points and also led the Bronchos with 10 rebounds for his eighth double-double of the season, while David Thomas hit four 3-pointers in a 19-point outing.
DeAngelo Garrett and Adam Terneus scored 12 points apiece, with Garrett adding seven rebounds in his first start of the season,
The Savage Storm led 13-9 early before consecutive layups from Harper, Michael Sosanya and Shane Carroll fueled the 15-2 run to put UCO on top 24-15 with 8:34 left in the half. Harper pushed the lead to double digits at 28-17 on two free throws with 7:10 remaining and the Bronchos went on to a 35-28 halftime advantage.
UCO then put the game away in the opening four minutes of the second half with its 18-2 run that bumped the lead to 23. Thomas had a pair of 3-pointers in scoring eight points during that spurt, while Harper added six points and Garrett four as the Bronchos went up 53-30 with 16:29 left to play.
The lead reached 31 at 66-35 on a Sosanya bucket at the 12:56 mark and SOSU got no closer than 27 the rest of the way.
UCO has a week off before resuming LSC North action next Saturday afternoon at Cameron.
