WARRENSBURG, Mo. (Nov. 14) -- Heavyweight Dustin Finn knocked off the defending Division I national champion en route to a runner-up finish in leading seven Central Oklahoma placers at the Central Missouri Open here Saturday.
Finn and 125-pounder Seth Johnson both came in second for the Bronchos in the rugged one-day tournament that attacted a number of Division I teams, while 125 Casy Rowell was third, 197 Jarrett Edison fourth, 157 Ed Jackson and 165 Derrick Adkins fifth and 133 Trison Graham sixth.
Finn had the biggest win of the day for UCO in the semifinals when the two-time Division II runner-up upset reigning Division I champion and top-ranked Mark Ellis of Missouri, 4-2. Finn fell to Oklahoma State's third-rated Jared Rosholt 5-2 in the finals.
Johnson had two falls in making the finalls before losing to OSU's Ladd Rupp.
"It was a good, quality tournament and we had a lot of guys get some good mat time," UCO coach David James said. "Dustin had a great win over Ellis and really did a good job today, as did Seth in making the finals. We've got some young guys who have to learn to be more consistent, but we made some positive strides today."
Rowell won two matches in making the semifinals before dropping a 3-2 decision to Rupp when he narrowly missed on a takedown at the buzzer, but the freshman bounced back with 9-5 and 11-4 consolation wins to finish third for the second straight week.
Graham won his first three matches to make the semifinals before losing three straight in taking sixth, while Jackson rebounded from a first-round loss to win six consolation matches in finishing fifth.
Adkins had a 5-1 record in his fifth-place effort and Edison advanced to the semifnals before losing a close 3-2 decision to top-seeded Andrew Sanchez of McKendree en route to his fourth-place effort.
The Bronchos return to dual action Tuesday, traveling to Oklahoma City University for a 7 p.m. match.
