RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. (Oct. 3) –
Back-to-back kills by Taylor Summers and Meaghan Wedberg lifted Central Oklahoma to a 17-15 fifth-set win and a hard-earned victory over Arkansas Tech here Saturday on the final day of the ATU Invitational.

The Bronchos swept their two matches Saturday, overwhelming Arkansas-Monticello 25-13, 25-20, 25-14 before getting past the host Golden Sun 25-19, 25-20, 11-25, 18-25, 17-15.

It was UCO's first five-set win of the season after four earlier losses and enabled the Bronchos to even their record at 10-10.

“We finally found a way to win a five-set match and that was huge for us,” UCO coach Jeff Boyland said. “It was a great match that could have gone either way at the end and we got it done.”

There were 13 ties and six lead changes in the fateful fifth set against ATU, with neither team able to get more than a one-point advantage.

UCO took a 14-13 lead on a block by Wedberg and Alex Richardson, but the Golden Sun tied it at 14 before Richardson gave the Bronchos a 15-14 lead with a kill.

ATU pulled even again at 15, but this time the Bronchos came back with a kill by Simmers off a Wedberg set and then Wedberg ended the two-hour battle with her career-high 15th kill of the match.

Wedberg hit .500 with 15 kills and just three errors in 24 attacks against ATU while adding 37 assists, 11 digs and six blocks as she earned all-tournament honors.  UCO also got 10 kills each from Richardson, Kristen Wilson and Zuela Adom and Summers added eight kills.

The Bronchos dominated Arkansas-Monticello in their first win of the day, hitting a solid .258 as a team. Adom led the way with 10 kills and seven blocks, while Wedberg hit a sizzling .727 with eight kills and no errors in 11 attacks.

UCO returns to Lone Star Conference play next week, going to Eastern New Mexico and West Texas A&M.
