EDMOND (Sept. 5) – Central Oklahoma failed to capitalize on several close-range scoring chances and Truman State took advantage of a couple of defensive lapses to hand the No. 9-ranked Bronchos a 2-0 setback on the first day of the UCO Invitational Friday afternoon at Tom Thompson Field.

It was the first loss in four games for the Bronchos, who had allowed just one goal in their 3-0 start, while Truman improved to 3-0 with its second shutout win over a ranked opponent this season.

UCO returns to action Sunday with a 2 p.m. contest against Central Missouri, which routed Southwestern Oklahoma 7-2 in Friday’s first game.

“We got some great looks and had our chances but couldn’t take advantage and that was disappointing,” UCO coach Mike Cook said. “We didn’t seem to play with much intensity and urgency until it was 2-0 and we just couldn’t come back.”

The Bronchos missed a shot from close range barely a minute into the contest with a chance to take the early lead, with Truman taking a 1-0 lead on a long goal just over the outstretched arms of goalkeeper Josie Baker in the 11th minute.

Baker made a nice save in the latter stages of the first half to keep UCO within 1-0 and the Bronchos hit another close-range shot over the net in the final minutes to go into halftime trailing for the first time this season.

The Bulldogs took a 2-0 advantage eight minutes into the second half and UCO couldn’t answer. TSU goalkeeper Denise Childress made diving stops on hard shots by Kayla Wright and Katy Kashwer during a 10-minute span down the stretch and another shot from in front of the box was high.

The Bronchos finished with a 12-8 shot advantage, with Childress making seven saves for Truman.
