Jaron Maestas

Jaron Maestas enters his sixth year as head tennis coach at the University of Central Oklahoma, a program he has turned into a national contender.

Maestas has already piled up a 78-22 career coaching record at Central Oklahoma, winning the 2019 and 2021 MIAA Championships and advancing in the NCAA Division II national tournament each of his five seasons.

The Bronchos posted the best record in school history in 2021, going 21-2 and reaching the national semifinals - also the furthest any Central team had advanced in the postseason. Maestas led UCO to 19 consecutive wins, another school record, and coached four All-Americans along the way.

The Bronchos reached No. 3 in the national rankings, had two individuals ranked in the top five in the country in singles play, and two more doubles teams ranked in the top 10 in the country. Central earned all six positions on the First Team All-MIAA lineup for singles and all three positions on the First Team All-MIAA lineup for doubles. Maestas was named Coach of the Year while Adel-Byanu Abidullina (Player of the Year) and Mae Canete (Freshman of the Year) also earned individual awards.

Abidullina and Canete were both singles All-Americans while Isabella Dunlap and Paola Landin joined the two as doubles All-Americans.

Maestas had an immediate impact on the Central Oklahoma women's tennis program after taking over the reigns in 2016.

He led the Bronchos to a 14-9 record in 2016-17, with UCO winning its first NCAA Division II national tournament match since 1999 in beating Nebraska-Kearney to make it to the Central Regional finals. Three players earned second-team All-MIAA honors and two more were honorable mention selections.

He followed a successful first year with one of the best tennis seasons in school history in 2017-18. Maestas led the Bronchos to another national tournament appearance, won the NCAA Division II Central Region II Championship and made it all the way to the national quarterfinals before its season ended there.

The Bronchos tied a then school record with 20 wins to only four losses. Central had all six of its players on roster earn All-MIAA honors while freshman sensation Laetitia Charbonnet not only earned ITA Central Regional Freshman of the Year, but also All-American honors.

In 2018-19, Maestas kept it going with a 19-5 record and another trip to the national tournament. UCO finished second in the MIAA regular season before winning the postseason championship, then winning the NCAA Central Region I title and making it to the NCAA Championship Round of 16. He guided the then freshman Dunlap to the ITA National Championship where she finished runner-up. Dunlap would go on to be an All-American and earn ITA National Freshman of the Year. UCO also had another singles All-American in Abidullina and a doubles team earn All-American honors in Dunlap and Landin.

Central Oklahoma was 4-2 and ranked ninth in the nation in 2019-20 when the season was abruptly halted due to a global health crisis.

Jaron came to UCO after 11 years as the head professional at the Philcrest Hills Tennis Club in Tulsa.

A native of Las Vegas, N.M, Maestas played collegiately at both Division II Western New Mexico and Division I New Mexico State before graduating from NMSU in 2005.

He worked at the Picacho Hills Tennis Club in Las Cruces, N.M. while at NMSU and then took over as the head professional at Philcrest Hills in 2005.

Maestas' duties there included private and group lessons, league team coaching, tournament administration and the implementation of a strength and conditioning program.

He coached 10 players at Philcrest Hills who went on to win Oklahoma state high school championships and 12 players from his program went on to play at the collegiate level.

Jaron and his wife, Layne, have two children (Jaxton and Landon).
