Belt Shines in All-Star Event

WADSWORTH, Ohio (April 23) -- Central Oklahoma's Sam Belt scored 15 points and pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds to lead his Premier Pontiac team to a 102-90 win on the first day of the Collegiate Basketball Invitational here Thursday.

It was the first of at least three games Belt will play in the all-star event in which eight teams compete. Sixty-four of the finest seniors from NCAA Division II and III and NAIA I and II schools are participating in the three-day tournament, which concludes with a Saturday all-star game that will be broadcast on ESPNU.

Belt, who earned All-America honors in leading UCO to a 28-6 record and a berth in the NCAA Division II Elite Eight, hit 6-of-14 shots and 2-of-4 free throws in his 15-point outing while adding four assists and one steal and 32 minutes of playing time.

His 10 rebonds led both teams, with seven of those coming on the defensive end.

Belt's team rallied from a 27-16 first-half deficit for the win over Renacci-Doraty Chevrolet, with Belt scoring all five of his first-half points in a two-minute span to help fuel the comeback.

Premier led 55-46 at halftime and Belt scored 10 second-half points to keeping Renacci-Doraty at bay, making a layup with 1:29 left to give his team a 99-88 lead and then rebounding a Renacci missed 3-pointer at the other end to clinch the win.

Belt was named LSC North Division Player of the Year and was MVP of the LSC Tournament before earning All-America recognition by the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC), Basketball Times and Division II Bulletin.

The Broken Arrow product averaged 19.1 points and 7.8 rebounds a game this season, finishing seventh on UCO's season-season points list with 650. He played in every game (122) during his four-year UCO career and set school career records for 3-pointers made (263) and attempted (698) and free throws made (511) and attempted (652).

Belt also finished second in career scoring with 1,918 points and third in career rebounding with 845 boards.
