UCO Outlasts Kearney In Big Road Win

Central Oklahoma Earns 32-17 Win At Nebraska Kearney To Improve To 3-0 On The Season

KEARNEY, Neb. – Central Oklahoma used a dominating fourth quarter to pull away from Nebraska Kearney Saturday afternoon as the Bronchos beat the Lopers 32-17 in MIAA play.

Central Oklahoma moved to 3-0 on the season and 2-0 in the MIAA. Nebraska Kearney is 2-1 overall and 1-1 in league play.

This week, similar to last week, the game was 0-0 at the end of the first quarter. It got to 14-14 at halftime, then UNK outscored UCO 3-2 in the third quarter. The two-point safety was the turning point in the game.

Late in the third quarter with the Bronchos driving down the field, Central quarterback Jett Huff threw an interception at the UNK 1-yard line. The defensive back went back into the end zone and Dominique Dunn made the tackle for the safety. That made the game 17-16 and gave UCO the ball back.

As the game shifted to the fourth quarter, the Bronchos took over.

"I'm pleased with our team's performance today," UCO head football coach Adam Dorrel said. "We weren't our best in any area, but we fought for it and got the job done. Winning games like this will help the team grow and get better moving forward."

On the first play of the fourth quarter, Huff connected with Jacob Delso on a 33-yard touchdown pass to give UCO a 22-17 lead. The Bronchos then got a stop and followed a 7-play, 49-yard scoring drive capped off by a 4-yard touchdown run by Dev Mathews that put the Bronchos up 29-17.

Nicky Quevedo put the last points on the board with a 30-yard field goal to make it 32-17.

Central Oklahoma posted 146 yards rushing against UNK, which held opponents to just 62 yards per game prior to Saturday's contest. With 291 passing yards, the Bronchos outgained Kearney 437-267 in the game.

William Mason led the Central Oklahoma rushing attack. The sophomore running back carried the ball 27 times for 133 yards and one touchdown. Jaylen Cottrell added 10 carries for 27 yards and Mathews finished with nine yards on four carries with his one touchdown.

Huff, who also had a 3-yard touchdown run in the second quarter, was 27-for-35 passing for 291 yards and one touchdown.

He connected with Ashton Schumann 12 times for 89 yards, Dominique Dunn four times for 68 yards, and Terrill Davis five times for 65 yards. Delso had three catches for 42 yards and the one score. Madison Ridgeway had two catches for 13 yards, and Jayden Grey had one catch for 14 yards.

Dylan Buchheit led Central Oklahoma's defensive efforts Saturday, finishing with six tackles, including one in the backfield. Johnny Wilson, who had five tackles, had UCO's only sack of the game for a loss of seven yards. Jack Puckett also finished with five tackles. UCO had five tackles in the backfield on the day.

After the scoreless first quarter, Huff responded with his touchdown run that capped off a 9-play, 61-yard scoring drive to tie the game, 7-7, with 7:56 to play in the second quarter. Mason's 2-yard touchdown run with 1:50 left before halftime tied the game, 14-14.

Central Oklahoma is 3-0 for the first time since 2014. The Bronchos host Fort Hays State in Week 4 at Chad Richison Stadium. The game is First Responders Night and a Blue Out, scheduled to kickoff at 7 p.m.
